Future migrations
Big news! After an incredible run with hostbyte.net (seriously, huge thanks to them for the incredible deal and support), it's time for True Vanilla to move into its (hopefully) forever home.
We are migrating from a monthly host to our very own physical (home) server. This means that the server will have faster & better performance, and we have a significant increase in control over the server and will be able to protect it against attacks, bots or raids more effectively.
To compare, these are our current specs:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700 (due to it being a server host, you also share the CPU with other servers)
- 3.8 GHz base, boosting up to 5.3GHz
- 3 Cores
- Zen 4 Architecture
- Released on January 2023
- RAM: 29GB
- Storage: 260GB
And these will be our new specs (may change):
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 9600X
- 3.9 GHz base, boosting up to 5.4 GHz
+0.1 GHz increase
- 6 Cores
three more cores (with six more threads) that we can use for the servers, the website AND the discord bot
- Zen 5 Architecture
two years newer, and does 16% more work every second
- Released on August 2024
one and a half years newer and faster
- RAM: 32GB
3GB increase. we might expand this in the future
- DDR5
moves twice as much data and handles ~16% more work in the same time
- Storage: 500GB
almost double the amount of storage! we might also expand this in the future
- NVMe
up to 25 times faster than SATA
- SSD
up to 85 times faster than HDD
The plan
We expect the process to start in about a month and wrap up in six months. Here is what you should know:
- What we will be moving:
The website (the wiki and the blog), our Discord bot, and all of our Minecraft servers (the proxy, core and windfall).
- Uptime:
The servers will stay live for almost the entire duration! You won't see any downtime until the final month of the transition.
- The actual switch:
When we reach the final stage, we'll take Core down for a couple of days to transfer the world files while Windfall stays up. Once Core is settled in its new home, we'll swap and do the same for Windfall while Core is up and running. The bot and website might be down for a couple hours too. Official dates for these will be confirmed nearer to the time.
- Changes:
Because everything will now be hosted on one dedicated machine, we are taking the chance to completely redesign the Discord and website, and better integrate the Minecraft with them. The Minecraft servers will see no difference however in terms of playing experience (apart from performance).
Supporting the migration
The migration is a huge change for the server, and it will take a lot of work on my part. If you want to help us out, please think about giving a donation at
our Ko-fi page
.
We are very grateful for every donation, no matter how small, and it all goes directly to the server.
Stay tuned for more updates & news!
